Solo Speech & Drama – [Section 63] Dramatic Duologue

General Category Guidelines:

1 piece only to be performed.

Time stipulations – Performances must not exceed:
Year 3-6: (Ages 7-12) 3 minutes
Year 7-10: (Ages 12-16) 4 minutes
Year 11-12:(Ages(16-18) 5-7  minutes

All Drama sections are to be performed from memory unless otherwise stated.

No prompting allowed. Scripts may not be included as props, sets or costumes.

Scripts/Text are to be included via PDF in your registration form or by the appointed date.

Repertoire can be original or from plays, comedy stand up, movies, etc.

Performances that require sound effects must produce sound locally.
Entrants will be required to provide their own playback unit (ie. phone, laptop etc.) for any sound effects required. A cable will be provided front of stage, and it is the responsibility of the entrant to provide their own assistant (staff, teacher etc.) to play any sound effects at the appropriate time.

Performances may include languages other than English where it is contextual and therefore, can be readily understood by an audience.
Translations must be provided as part of the script PDF.

Mime and Physical Theatre routines are very welcome, but these must be scripted – you must provide the outline of your piece with specific intentions of blocking.

Use of offensive language will be penalised, and the performance may be stopped. The content of the script must be appropriate to the age of the performer and for a school age audience.

Entrants may bring minimal hand-held props. No set constructions permitted.

Costumes may be worn where appropriate, however, theatre blacks are preferred. While costuming is an optional requirement, they MUST adhere to appropriate modesty standards for the age. Costumes must preserve the dignity of the performer.

Performance may be physical with no or little dialogue but must be narrative and character driven and not pure dance.

Performance must be an interpretation not a recreation of a script.

Section Specific Guidelines:

Year 7-10: (Ages 12-16) 4 minutes
Year 11-12:(Ages(16-18) 5-7  minutes

Duologues can be chosen from any available repertoire that meets the standard of language and theme (suitable for a school aged/G rated audience).

Judging Criteria:

  • Interpretation of the script.
  • Manipulations of dramatic elements eg focus, tension space, role etc.
  • Engaging for an audience.
  • Clear vocal and movement skills.
  • Timing and energy.
  • Developing and sustaining characters’ emotional and physical life, commitment and belief.

Immediate Point Deductions:

  • 2 point deduction per 20 seconds over time.
  • 2 point deduction for imitation of a performer in place of interpretation.
  • 2 point deduction for inappropriate costume choice.
  • 5 Point deduction for script not previously submitted for approval on registration.
  • 100% point deduction for use of any swearing or “slurs”
