DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Public Speaking Solos\nLocation: Southern Cross Burwood – Drama Studio\nSection Number: 65 \nGeneral Category Guidelines:\n1 speech only to be performed. \nUse of offensive language will be penalised\, and the performance may be stopped. The content of the speech must be appropriate to the age of the performer and for a school age audience. \nNo staging constructions/elements permitted. \nSection Specific Guidelines:\nPublic Speaking will be offered in three divisions:\n-Years 5 & 6\n-Years 7/8/9\n-Years 10/11/12 \nTime Limit:\nYears 5 & 6 – 3 minutes (warning bell at 2 minutes)\nYears 7 – 9 – 4 minutes (warning bell at 3 minutes)\nYears 10 – 12 – 6 minutes (warning bell at 5 minutes) \nSpeakers will be asked to stop if they reach 1 minute over the maximum time. \nEach speaker will be required to complete a prepared speech to be selected from this list of set topics: \n2026 Season Topics \n* What if the world suddenly lost all technology?\n* The most important lesson I’ve ever learned is…\n* It is better to be kind\, than be right.\n* Sport is a great teacher.\n* If animals could talk…\n* The problem with AI…\n* The one thing that truly makes us human is…\n* Sometimes\, the smallest actions make the biggest difference.\n* Courage is not just for heroes. \nThe speech will be directly based on (or connected by suggestion) to the topic. \nThe speaker must present a speech\, not a dramatic performance. The speech should represent the speaker’s point of view. \nSpeech is to be original written by student and not AI generated. \nProps are not permitted in this section. \nCostumes are not required – school uniforms or neat performance wear are preferred. \nProvided Equipment:\n1 lectern or music stand (as available) \nPlease note – this is an unamplified section. \nJudging Criteria:\n\nThe speaker should feel a genuine connection with the content of their speech and present it formally but naturally. The piece should be fresh and engaging and should not appear to be just a memorised recital delivery.\nSpeech Content\n\nOriginal content and point of view\nCoherent structure with a clear purpose\nThought provoking\nUse of language to engage\nLinked to Speech Topics”\n\n\nDelivery and Vocal Expression\n\nEngaging delivery\nEye Contact\nAppropriate gestures\nVocal Dynamics\nLittle/no use of notes\n\n\n\nImmediate Point Deductions:\n\n2 point deduction per 20 seconds over the maximum time.\n5 point deduction for speech not previously submitted for approval on registration\n2 point deduction for heavy reliance on cue cards/written material.\n100% point deduction for use of any swearing or “slurs”
