Solo Instrumental – [Section 18] Percussion Solo

General Category Guidelines:

1 piece or 1 movement from a piece only to be performed.

Section Specific Guidelines:

Time limits must not exceed stipulated section time limits:
Ages 8-15: 3 mins
Ages 16-18: 5 mins

For ALL instrumental sections, an accompaniment (live or recorded) MUST be provided, unless the piece was written intentionally to be performed unaccompanied.

Accompaniment may be provided by a backing track or by a live accompanist. Performers must provide their own piano/instrumental accompanist or backing track.

Backing tracks must be instrumental harmonic tracks only with no melodic line.

The repertoire is to be appropriate to all audiences, and should be aligned with SCS’ mission, vision and values.

Section 18 is exempt from Grade Requirements and will not require a score to be attached.

Music Stands & Chairs

1 Guitar amp | 1 Bass amp | Direct Input for acoustic guitars

1 Standard Drum Kit

Grand Piano or Weighted Keys (subject to availability)

Performers/schools WILL supply any further amplification or effects required i.e. distortion pedal, and must advise of any additional amplification/effects to be used in their performance as part of their registration.

Judging Criteria:

  • Technical fluency and facility
  • Intonation
  • Rhythm
  • Solo performance expression
  • Dynamics and articulation appropriate to style
  • Solo awareness, communication with accompanist/familiarity with backing track

Immediate Point Deductions:

  • 2 point deduction per 20 seconds over time.
  • 2 point deduction for a teacher or adult playing accompaniment that is more a part than accompaniment.
  • 2 point deduction for lyrics and themes that are no G-rated
  • 100% points deduction for any explicit language on a backing track, and no places will be awarded, only written feedback given by the adjudicator.
