Solo Vocal – [Section 33] Contemporary Religious Vocal Solo

General Category Guidelines:

1 piece only to be performed.

A copy of your music score must be provided at point of registration.

May be performed with or without a microphone.

Must be performed with accompaniment, unless the score indicates it is to be performed a cappella.

Accompaniment may be provided by a backing track or by a solo pianist/ instrumentalist. Performers must provide their own piano/instrumental accompanist.

Backing tracks must be instrumental tracks only with no vocal lines. See General Participation Guidelines for backing track submission requirements. Backing Tracks will be played by the onsite technician on the day.

All lyrics should be memorised including for self accompaniment.

Repertoire should be appropriate for all ages – language and themes should be in keeping with a school age audience, and comply with SCS mission, vision and values.

Section Specific Guidelines:

Time stipulations – performances must not exceed:
Years 3-10 (ages 7 – 16): 4 minutes
Years 11-12 (ages 16-18): 5 minutes
Performances will be stopped at 1 minute over time

 

Contemporary Religious Solo refers to modern music which is composed for religious use (eg Catholic Hymns, Christian Worship songs, Christian Pop, Gospel Music, etc). It does not refer to contemporary songs that contain religious lyrics or themes (e.g. Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, or Beyonce’s Ave Maria). For further clarification on whether a song is appropriate, please contact the Eisteddfod team.

Provided Equipment:

Up to 4 Microphones (hand held or on stand)

Grand Piano or Weighted Keys

Direct Input for guitars

Music stands

Chair for other instrumental accompaniment

***Please note, headset microphones are not available for any Vocal Solo Section***

Judging Criteria:

  • Intonation – pitch, tuning, tonal quality.
  • Rhythm, timing, overall structure.
  • Solo performance expression, memorisation and confidence.
  • Dynamics and articulation appropriate to style.
  • Solo awareness, communication with accompanist/ familiarity with backing track.
  • Choice of repertoire suitable for stage and ability.
  • Repertoire performed correctly represents the section genre.

Immediate Point Deductions:

  •  1 point for not providing a score of the song being performed.
  • 2 point deduction per 20 seconds over time.
  • 2 point deduction for inappropriate content or themes.
  • 100% points deduction for any explicit language, and no places will be awarded, only written feedback.
