DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Contemporary Vocal Solo \nLocation: Southern Cross Burwood – Primary – Auditorium\nSection Number: 34 \nGeneral Category Guidelines:\nPlease note – secondary students with 5 years or more experience will be placed in the Secondary Open regardless of age. \n***The Secondary Open Section will occur on Tuesday 14 April. All other Secondary Sections occur on Friday 17 April*** \n  \n1 piece only to be performed. \nA copy of your music score must be provided at point of registration. \nMay be performed with or without a microphone. \nMay be performed with or without accompaniment (a cappella). \nAccompaniment may be provided by a backing track or by a solo pianist/ instrumentalist. Performers must provide their own piano/instrumental accompanist. \nBacking tracks must be instrumental tracks only with no vocal lines. See General Participation Guidelines for backing track submission requirements. Backing Tracks will be played by the onsite technician on the day. \nAll lyrics should be memorised including for self accompaniment. \nRepertoire should be appropriate for all ages – language and themes should be in keeping with a school age audience\, and comply with SCS mission\, vision and values. \nSection Specific Guidelines:\nTime stipulations – performances must not exceed:\nYears 7-10 (ages 12-16): 4 minutes\nYears 11-12 (ages 16 – 18): 5 minutes\nPerformances will be stopped at 1 minute over time \n  \nThis section is for contemporary music only. Songs from stage or film musicals must be sung in Section 35: Musical Theatre. \nProvided Equipment:\nUp to 4 Microphones (hand held or on stand) \nGrand Piano \nDirect Input for guitars \nMusic stands \nChair for other instrumental accompaniment \n***Please note\, headset microphones are not available for any Vocal Solo Section*** \nJudging Criteria:\n\nIntonation – pitch\, tuning\, tonal quality.\nRhythm\, timing\, overall structure.\nSolo performance expression\, memorisation and confidence.\nDynamics and articulation appropriate to style.\nSolo awareness\, communication with accompanist/ familiarity with backing track.\nChoice of repertoire suitable for stage and ability.\nRepertoire performed correctly represents the section genre.\n\nImmediate Point Deductions:\n\n 1 point for not providing a score of the song being performed.\n2 point deduction per 20 seconds over time.\n2 point deduction for inappropriate content or themes.\n100% points deduction for any explicit language\, and no places will be awarded\, only written feedback.

Accompaniment may be provided by a backing track or by a solo pianist/ instrumentalist. \nBacking tracks must be instrumental tracks only with no vocal lines. See General Participation Guidelines for backing track submission requirements. Backing Tracks will be played by the onsite technician on the day. \nAll lyrics should be memorised including for self accompaniment. \nPerformers must provide their own piano/instrumental accompanist. \nMay be performed with or without a microphone. \nSection Specific Guidelines:\nTime stipulations – performances must not exceed:\nYear 3-10 (ages 7 – 16): 4 minutes\nYear 11-12 (ages 16 – 18): 5 minutes \nMusical Theatre Vocal Solos must be performed in costume. \nPerformance movement is permitted within the constraints of the provided technical equipment. \nMusical Theatre repertoire is not to be performed in the Contemporary Solo section\, they must be entered into the Musical Theatre section. If you are unsure please contact the Eisteddfod Team. \nRepertoire should be appropriate for all ages – language and themes should be in keeping with a school age audience\, and comply with SCS mission\, vision and values. \nMusical Theatre songs must come from stage\, film or radio musicals only. Eg. A song from a movie that is on the soundtrack and not a featured song sung in the course of the film is not considered “musical” repertoire for the purposes of this section. \nEntrants should avoid singing repertoire that has a high percentage of speak-singing (non-pitched) material. Ensure that the majority of the song contains melodic content. \n  \nProvided Equipment:\nUp to 4 Microphones (hand held or on stand) \nGrand Piano or Weighted Keys (as available at venue) \nDirect Input for guitars \nMusic stands \nChair for other instrumental accompaniment. \n***Please note\, headset microphones are not available for any Vocal Solo Section*** \nJudging Criteria:\n\nIntonation – pitch\, tuning\, tonal quality.\nRhythm\, timing\, overall structure.\nSolo performance expression\, memorisation and confidence.\nDynamics and articulation appropriate to style.\nSolo awareness\, communication with accompanist/ familiarity with backing track.\nChoice of repertoire suitable for stage and ability.\nRepertoire performed correctly represents the section genre.\n\nMusical Theatre Additional Criteria \n\nPerformance intentions – relevance and impact of movement and acting choices.\nCostume appropriateness\n\nImmediate Point Deductions:\n\n1 point for not providing a score of the song being performed\n1 point deduction for not singing repertoire from a Musical or Film.\n2 point deduction per 20 seconds over time.\n2 point deduction for inappropriate costume choice in Musical Theatre Vocal Solo:\n– Costumes show midriff\n– Costumes are revealing or contain cut outs.\n2 point deduction for inappropriate content or themes.\n100% point deduction for any explicit language\, and no places will be awarded\, only written feedback.
