Ensemble Instrumental – [Section 2] Contemporary Music Ensemble: Primary & Secondary

General Category Guidelines:

1 piece only to be performed.

Reasonable additional time will be granted for setup, soundcheck and pack down. This time must not exceed 3 minutes in total.

Backing tracks are not permitted in this section.

Teachers/tutors/non-students are permitted to accompany or perform in primary school music ensembles.

Teachers/tutors/non-students are NOT permitted to accompany or perform in any secondary school music ensembles.

Repertoire should be appropriate for all ages – language and themes should be in keeping with a school age audience, and comply with SCS mission, vision and values.

Section Specific Guidelines:

Performer Limit:
4-20 Performers

Time stipulations – performances must not exceed:
Year 3-10: 4 minutes
Year 11-12: 5 minutes
Performance will be stopped at 1 minute after time.

Provided Equipment:

Music Stands & Chairs

2 Guitar amp | 1 Bass amp

1 Standard Drum Kit

2 Keyboards

Performers/schools WILL supply any further amplification or effects required i.e. distortion pedal.

Performers/schools must advise of any additional amplification/effects to be used in their performance as part of their registration.

Schools are encouraged to bring any equipment that is specific to your performance if it has particular settings – such as a keyboard with sounds or tones that you rehearse with.

Judging Criteria:

  • Intonation.
  • Rhythm.
  • Ensemble balance/blend.
  • Dynamics and articulation appropriate to style.
  • Ensemble awareness (eg following leader, interaction with ensemble).

Immediate Point Deductions:

  • 2 point deduction per 30 seconds over time.
  • 2 point deduction for using any pre-recorded music.
  • 2 point deduction for Teachers playing a significant musical part in Primary sections (more than accompanying).
  • 2 point deduction for setup and strike longer than 3 minutes.
  • 2 point deduction for inappropriate content or themes.
  • 100% points deduction for any explicit language, and no places will be awarded, only written feedback
